2015-09-16 - Devlog - Quarries of Scred 2: Quarreling Quarriers - 004

There's been a lot of progress on the game since the last update. Forgive me if I miss anything I've worked on - it's been a long fortnight.

Despite being sick, I managed to get some solid progress in this week. While last week's progress was very much about the ingame visuals and gameplay elements, this week was about what I call framing (that is, the elements around the actual gameplay that help the player enjoy it). This week, I coded in Crabbens to commentate the early portions of game setup

I've been pretty fortunate the last fortnight or so to get a surprisingly good amount of work done on QoS2:QQ. Some of it's been surprisingly productive behind the scenes stuff that the players may not notice, but some of it has been very visually indicative.

I've added:

The last little while, I've been working on a multiplayer version of Quarries of Scred, my first commercially available game. The multiplayer variant is aimed at local, competitive play (I've thrown around the pros and cons of network play, and co-operative play and decided against them both. This'll be covered in a later piece).

It's been a little while since the last entry, and I've managed to get a fair amount of different titles pushed through. After the overbearing-ness of the MtG artifacts cycle, I figured I needed something far lighter to run with, so I dipped into the MythAdventures series by Robert Asprin. This proved to be a pretty good choice - they're better than I remember them (and, frankly, they read a bit better than the Discworld books - hilariously, I recall a secondhand book dealer trying to get me into them many, many moons ago.

Apparently I've been doing quite well in the reading department since the previous entry, because the list is quite reasonable. As predicted, Dredd vs Death was very, very good - and I've followed it up with some rather good reads.

2015-07-16 - 'I want to make an MMO'

This is actually a reposted entry from my old site (from 2013-03-25) - but it's always going to be appropriate so I need a new link to send to people.

'So, I was thinking of making an MMORPG... it's my first project....'

Hold up. Let me stop you, right there. This is a bad idea. Very, very, very bad. Why? Because if you do this, it will be your last game as well...

Here's why this is a bad, bad, soul destroying idea. IF you:

I'm kind of in love, at the moment, with the idea of USB dead drops. This is something that's apparently been going on for quite some time, and there's even a few here in my own city.

Given that I've been a bit too sick to do much else (apart from going to work, because... money), I've been reading quite a considerable amount the last week or so. I had a bit of a hold up last weekend due to Oz Comic-con, but otherwise I've been doing quite a fair amount. Since the last post, I've smashed out:

I'm a bit sick at the moment (wooo, post-convention flu/thing), and am not able to really concentrate enough for development. However, I've been throwing around ideas for what I want to add in the next update of Quarries of Scred, and it's always good to get these things down. This is a list I've been adding to and removing from over the last few months based on things people have said to me at cons, steam forums & twitter - as well as a bunch of evil of my own making.
