Reclamation

Reclamation has been shelved in favour of its storyline sequel Arnthak

Reclamation

Reclamation is a game currently being created using the Tarvos game engine via the Java programming language.

A Whole New World

Storyline

Having been cast out by his Rival in a vicious battle, the Archmage has returned from lands of exile to the floating domain of Arnthak. In order to reclaim his previous territories, he must journey to his tower and reclaim the powers that he once wielded so easily.

The World of Arnthak

Arnthak has been developed with a number of things in mind - the first of which, is to attempt to avoid most standard fantasy cliches. Arnthak will not feature the following:

  • Werewolves
  • Vampires
  • Dragons
  • Elves
  • Dwarves
  • Goblins
  • Orcs

Arnthak, however, will feature a land populated by the experimental waste of the Mages - the tree dwelling fungal Myconids, and ever hungry Ratmen constantly at war since the dissappearance of their masters. Strange beasts and hybrids roam the lands. The ancient dead have also begun to rise, spurred on by the bizarre cultists hidden beneath the graveyard of old.

Interactivity

The Tarvos engine allows Reclamation to have a reasonable level of flexibility - one particular aspect is the ability to have items, and interact with things in the level. Barrels can be opened, fountains can be used to fill buckets, flame traps can be extinguished with water splashes. Boulders can be cracked open for loot. Many different object interactions are being considered and implemented.

It is hoped that a high level of interactivity between different objects within the game world will lend itself to a number of traps, puzzles and surprises for the player to experience.

Graphics

Reclamation has been created graphically using pixel art, constrained to the colours originally offered by the EGA palette. This has been done deliberately in order to achieve a specific look-and-feel, similar to games remembered fondly by myself.

The pixel art has been created by both myself (Noble Kale), and Pixelcade specifically for this series of games.

Software

Powered by Tarvos, a Java based game engine for 2D platformers, Reclamation has been slowly evolving with the engine development.

Tarvos has a number of features, including:

  • Items, Inventory screen
  • Multiple layers (as many as specified via the level data file. Most Tarvos levels have 5 layers)
  • An extendable GameEventManager class, which can be used to customise object interactions
  • Level data files and recursion (Level data files can contain an additional layer of level data, allowing for areas to be built up in movable 'Chunks')
  • Teleporters
  • Interaction with the background
  • Different Enemy AI
